Obedience Training (Basic & Advanced) - Joyful Dogs of Michigan
Obedience Training
Basic & Advanced Programs in Lansing, MI
Obedience training provides the foundation for a calm, predictable, and enjoyable life with your dog. At Joyful Dogs of Michigan, our Basic and Advanced obedience programs teach practical commands that matter in everyday life and allow you and your dog to enjoy the life together you both deserve.

Why Obedience Training Matters
Basic obedience training does more than trains simple commands. It creates mutual understanding and boundaries that keep dogs safe and families confident. Basic obedience provides the tools for day-to-day life: recall to prevent dangerous situations, polite walking for stress-free outings, and calm greetings for visitors, etc. It is the foundation for even more complex commands and greater control.
Advanced obedience expands on those foundational tools to allow off-leash control, reliable long-distance responses, and high-level impulse control that stands strong in busy, distracting environments. Our methods emphasize positive reinforcement, clear communication, and progressive proofing to real-world distractions.
Key Benefits of Basic & Advanced Obedience
Safety
Reliable recall and impulse control reduce risk of injury or lost dogs.
Enjoyable Outings
Calm walks and predictable public behavior make trips with your dog stress-free.
Family Harmony
Clear expectations reduce conflicts with children, guests, and other pets.
Mental Stimulation
Structured training provides needed cognitive work that reduces boredom-driven misbehavior.
Foundation for Advanced Skills
Basic obedience is essential to go on to advanced skills and for things like service dog tasks, AKC titles, or becoming a therapy dog. Advanced Obedience training gives both dog and owner greater freedom and teaches distance and duration reliability.
Positive Relationship
Reward-based training strengthens the bond and motivates cooperative behavior. Dogs who have been trained using positive methods are Joyful Dogs.

Training Methods and Tools
Training Methods and Tools
We use positive reinforcement (treats, toys, and praise) combined with clear a verbal marker to shape desirable behaviors. We design proofing plans that gradually expose the dog to realistic triggers while ensuring success and confidence.
Case Examples
Basic Transformation
"A rambunctious adolescent dog who couldn’t be walked by family learned polite walking and a calm “place” behavior over an 8-week program, enabling family walks without stress."
Advanced Achievement
"A family dog trained for advanced off-leash control and directional cues, demonstrating reliable distance work in public parks after a 10-week plan."
How We Measure Success
We set specific, measurable behavioral goals (e.g., recall with distraction at 30 feet, loose-leash walking for 30 minutes) and track progress through session notes, owner videos, and real-world demonstrations.
Success is defined by reliable performance in daily life, not just controlled environments.
Owner Participation & Education
Owner education is integral to success. Our trainers demonstrate cues, coach reinforcement timing, and provide written plans and often videos of dog and handler working on each command.
We focus on creating owners who can consistently set up success scenarios and gradually increase difficulty while maintaining rewards. Treats are phased out during training.
Advanced Obedience — Skills for Reliable Control
- Off-Leash Reliability - Freedom for dog and owner with reliable recall.
*Please note that dogs should only be off leash in areas that are off-leash legal.
- Distance Control & Duration - Commands performed reliably from varied distances and lengths of time.
- Proofing Under Distractions - Maintain behaviors in the presence of animals, people, and other stimuli.
- Emergency Recall - Flawless recall under extreme distractions.
- Distance Work - Distance-based directional commands. Hand/arm gestures for distance control where voice commands are unlikely to be heard.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q: How long before my dog has a reliable recall?
A: Dogs learn recall in controlled conditions in the first session in our Basic Obedience course. Reliable recall under all conditions may take several months of consistent practice and proofing.
Q: Can older dogs or special needs dogs learn new behaviors?
A: Absolutely. Dogs of any age can learn. We tailor methods to senior dogs’ mobility and energy levels. We have successfully trained blind, deaf, and physically impaired dogs.
Q: How often should we practice?
A: Short daily practice sessions (10 minutes average) repeated several times are most effective. Consistency beats duration.
Q: What happens if my dog regresses?
A: Regression often signals inconsistency in practice or unclear cues. We analyze routines, provide corrective steps, and may recommend booster sessions.
